The Opportunity
As the City Solicitor you will report directly to the City Manager and act as a legal advisor to the Corporate Leadership Team. Your responsibilities include supporting the organization in all crucial decision-making processes by engaging with Managers and Department Heads to provide timely and strategic legal advice and opinions while managing external legal services when required.
The City Solicitor will be responsible for:
  • Reviewing and drafting bylaws
  • Reviewing and drafting contracts/agreements
  • Managing the use of external legal counsel by the organization
  • Acting as legal liaison for all matters requiring external legal counsel
  • Interpreting legislation, case law and contracts and providing legal opinions to the organization
  • Assist with training initiatives to Administration and Elected Officials
  • Provide advice to Elected Officials as required including information related to the Council Code of Conduct
  • Support/manage complaint investigations through the Complaint Adjudication Committee
  • Support Administration with quasi-judicial hearings (SDAB/ARB)
  • Manage ligation files
  • Manage expropriation files
  • Legal support for risk management and insurance portfolio
As the City Solicitor, your strong attention to detail and excellent communication skills will allow you to analyze complex legal issues and translate legal concepts effectively.
You Bring
The City Solicitor will require:
  • Membership with the Law Society of Alberta
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with confidence under time constraints
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team environment
  • Strong legal research skills and computer literacy
  • Minimum 5 years practicing law post articles
Assets include experience in:
  • Municipal, enforcement or contract law - Contract/agreement drafting - Contract negotiation
  • Municipal governance - Taxation and Assessment - Planning and Development
Having a comprehensive knowledge of applicable legislation relating to relevant federal and provincial legislation will ensure your success in the role of City Solicitor for the City of Grande Prairie.
This is an Off-Grid salaried position subject to negotiation.
